A source close to The Henny Report has confirmed that the Cincinatti Reds were ‘aggressive’ on Goldschmidt.
The source, who will remain anonymous, said that the Reds unwillingness to include catcher Curt Casali in the deal was the main reason the deal did not get completed.
Goldschmidt was instead dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday for basically nothing.
Reds President of Baseball Operations, Dick Williams, offered the following statement:
“We stand by our commitment to Curt Casali and his family and will not trade him under any circumstances. We envision Curt being a Red for life and are in the process of talking about an extension that would keep him here for the rest of his baseball career. We are still looking at the trade and free agent market and have our eye on Adam Rosales, Wilmer Flores, and some other scrappy guys.”
Reds’ Special Assistant to the GM, Jumbo Diaz, offered this quote (translated from Spanish):
“Curt is one of the best defensive catchers I’ve had the privilege of toeing the slab with. His quiet confidence and firm grip of my balls kept me warm and comfy on the mound. We’ve watched days worth of film on Curtzy (Casali) and I can’t begin to say how thrilled to be keeping him here in the city that never sleeps.
More to come.
